Site Director

All staff members must comply with Discovery Montessori policies and procedures as well as all state regulations governing this facility, in particular, those contained in the Manual of Policies and Procedures, Title 22, Division 12, Chapter 1, State of California, Health and Welfare Agency, Department of Social Services.

Reporting Relationship

The Director reports to the Executive Director.  The Director supervises all staff members. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Director is ultimately responsible for the day-to-day operation of the school. The Director’s most important responsibility is to ensure that every student is supervised at all times by well-trained and qualified staff members while on school grounds. Additionally, the Director ensures the school complies with all pertinent regulations, earns the respect of peers, employees, parents, and company leaders, and must be a model of professionalism for parents, children, and staff.

The responsibilities of the Director are many and varied and include, but are not limited to, those activities listed within this document. As the lead for curriculum development, the Director implements the Montessori curriculum and supports the school’s efforts toward achieving and maintaining Montessori professional standards. As an administrator, the Director maintains high levels of enrollment, accurately prepares, and maintains student files and records, maintains accurate billing records, collects and records tuition, prepares deposits, keeps tuition collection current, and orders supplies.

The following list is intended to convey the wide range of responsibilities of the Director but is not intended to be exhaustive.

Leadership and Administration

  • Support and implement the school’s mission, values, goals, and policies as described in school handbooks for staff and parents.

  • Always ensure proper staffing levels and teacher-to-student ratios.

  • Establish and maintain the records of the school.

  • Enroll students in the school and collect and record tuition.

  • Ensure daily sign-in and sign-out records are maintained and accurate.

  • Ensure there are adequate supplies to support the school programs.

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders, including Executive staff, co-workers, families, children, and CCLD staff.

  • Ensure all staff interact and communicate respectfully with parents and children.

  • Share classroom and facility cleaning responsibilities, classroom maintenance and care of the facility with other staff members.

Supervision and Personnel

  • Assist in the selection and hiring of staff, properly prepare staff CCLD folders, and properly associate new hires and substitute teachers with the appropriate school license(s).

  • Ensure orientation and training is received by staff members; equip employees with job-critical knowledge and education.

  • Actively lead teaching staff to effectively accomplish the school’s goals and objectives.

  • Schedule and facilitate staff meetings, in-service training, and disaster drills.

  • Provide for and maintain records of staff training, orientation, and meetings as required by school policy and licensing standards.

  • Implement a professional development program for staff members.

  • Perform annual evaluations on or before staff anniversary dates.

  • Approve staff timesheets, expense reports, Paid Time Off (PTO) requests.

  • Conduct all employee discipline in accordance with school standards.

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Implement and monitor the Montessori curriculum.

  • Support the school’s efforts toward achieving and maintaining Montessori professional standards.

  • Plans and prepares for all special events.

Facilities and Safety

  • Ensure the school complies with all pertinent government regulations, such as Title 22, labor laws, etc.

  • Ensure the cleanliness of the classrooms and common areas and that all equipment is maintained in good order.

  • Maintain and ensure staff are trained on the Emergency Response Plan; conduct fire and earthquake drills as required by Title 22.

  • Ensure all food and supplies are stored safely and according to regulations.

  • Liaison with licensing agencies to ensure that all licensing requirements are met.

Business and Financial

  • Ensure all annual and periodic CCLD reporting requirements are met.

  • Maintain an active waiting list and maximize enrollment.

  • Ensure accurate billing and timely receivables.

  • Prepare tuition receipts for deposit.

  • Prepare business and financial reports for review.

  • Ensure all licenses and permits are current.

Communications and Marketing

  • Schedule interviews and conduct school visits for prospective new students and their parents.

  • Assist in the greeting and dismissing of the students and their parents.

  • Prepare and distribute weekly and monthly parent communications.

  • Respond to parent inquiries in a timely manner.

Essential Functions

  • Frequent bending, lifting and reaching are required; the ability to remain physically aware of the location of all children in a specific group at all times.

  • Standing for long periods and the ability to lift a young child if necessary.

  • Being physically capable of interacting with children 6 weeks through 6 years of age.

  • Must be mentally and emotionally prepared and capable of dealing with children in a mature, non-threatening manner.

  • Regular attendance, ability to respond to an emergency, ability to visually supervise children.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred.

  • Completion, with passing grades of 18 semester units or equivalent quarterly units in Early Childhood Education at an accredited or approved college or university.

    • Six semester units or equivalent shall be in administration or staff relations.

    • Twelve semester units or equivalent shall be in courses which cover the general areas of child growth and development or human growth and development; child, family and community or child and family; and program/curriculum.

  • Four years of teaching in a licensed childcare center or comparable group childcare program.

  • Current CPR and First Aid training.
